Dog Weight Loss:

Weight loss is due to only two processes which may occur separately or together. These processes are excessive calorie consumption or insufficient calorie intake/utilization. The reason for these processes can vary greatly from hyperthyroidism and cancer to inflammatory bowel disease and starvation. As a result, diagnostic testing can be extensive.

Dog Weight Loss Causes:

Malabsorption; chronic diarrhea or vomiting; anorexia; hyperthyroidism; or starvation.

Dog Weight Loss Treatment:

Anti-emetics (eg. maropitant); antihelmintics (dewormers); pro-biotics; methimazole (for hyperthyroidism); treatment of the underlying cause of the weight loss.

Dog Weight Loss Prevention:

Avoid human foods; avoid fatty or greasy food; regularly test and deworm your pets; use pro-biotics; feed diets high in fiber.
