Dog Hot Spots:
A hot spot is also known as moist dermatitis. These lesions are self inflicted wounds. The pet licks and chews at itself in areas that itch or are sore. The licking and chewing traumatizes the skin, causing inflammation, open wounds and allows secondary bacterial infections. Treatment of hot spots must address both the hot spot and the underlying reason the pet caused the hot spot in the first place.
Dog Hot Spots Causes:
Allergies, trauma, soreness, fleas and any other insult to the skin.
Dog Hot Spots Treatment:
Skin lesions need to be cleansed and treated with anti-inflammatory medication. The original cause of the hot spot has to be addressed (ie. fleas, trauma, allergies, arthritis,etc.).
Dog Hot Spots Prevention:
Prevention: Flea control, arthritis treatment and treatment of other soreness.
