Dog Ear and Hearing Problems:

The ear is a unique anatomical structure since the external ear canal is a dead end, open to the outside world while the middle ear is a confined area. Infections can effect the two areas with quite different results. External ear canal infections are bothersome and many times result in self trauma. Middle ear infections can result in balance problems. Bacteria can infect both areas, while yeast and parasites commonly infect the external ear canal.

Dog Ear and Hearing Problems Causes:

Ear problems are most commonly due to allergies, bacteria, yeast or mites.

Dog Ear and Hearing Problems Treatment:

Inflammation is reduced via antihistamines or corticosteroids. Bacteria are eliminated by antibiotics while yeast are eliminated by antifungals. Tris-EDTA based ear cleansers help antibiotics fight bacterial infections. Food allergy treatment should include hypoallergenic or novel diets. Mites are treated with ivermectin or topical pesticides.

Dog Ear and Hearing Problems Prevention:

Prevention can be aided by regular cleaning of the ears as well as early diagnosis and treatment of allergies and ear mites.
