Dog Dandruff:
Dandruff is a flaking of the outer skin layer. The flaking could be due to a skin disorder or a reaction of the skin to an external stimulant such as low humidity, parasites or chemicals. Diagnosis can be challenging and elimination may require multiple types of treatment. These treatments may be life long.
Dog Dandruff Causes:
Dry skin and keratinization disorders.
Dog Dandruff Treatment:
Emollients (substances that soften and soothe the skin) can be used to correct dryness and scaling of the skin. AVOID human shampoos. Keep humidity levels above 40-50%. Otherwise have your veterinarian determine the cause of the dandruff and treat appropriately. This may require examination and treatment by a board certified dermatologist.
Dog Dandruff Prevention:
Avoid drying shampoos and frequent bathing. Emollient sprays and the addition of omega 3 fatty acids to your pet’s diet. See your veterinarian promptly if dandruff continues.
