Dog Anal Sac Disease:

Anal sacs, commonly known as “skunk glads”, are located just under the skin, on both sides of the anus. These “sacs” are actually glands that produce a stinky substance that is normally excreted on the stool as the pet poops. This stinky substance is what “marks” the area that the pet poops. The opening of these glands are located near the anus at 4 and 8 o’clock. Any inflammation of these openings can cause the glands to engorge with excrement and therefore irritate the pet. Pet may respond by dragging their butt on the floor and/or licking their anus.

Dog Anal Sac Disease Causes:

Anal Sacs Disease is commonly due to either inflammation/infection or tumor.

Dog Anal Sac Disease Treatment:

Anal sac tumors should be removed surgically. Inflammed/infected anal sacs are treated by first emptying the sacs and then treating with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. Your veterinarian may also infuse the sacs with an antibiotic/anti-inflammatory ointment.

Dog Anal Sac Disease Prevention:

Keep the area around the anal sacs clean and free of fecal matter. Keep your pet’s weight under control. Overweight pets are more prone to anal sac disease. Also, male pets should be neutered to reduce the chance of anal sac tumors.
